Depth
Skin & Coat Basics

  • A dog's skin is thinner and more delicate than ours, and its pH differs too — so human shampoo doesn't suit it.
  • Several hairs (thick and fine) grow from one pore — which is why coats are dense.
  • Hair sheds and regrows; some dogs shed heavily by season.
  • Sebum protects the coat, but dogs can't sweat over the body and sebum oxidises easily.

Research Skin also has a "microbial balance", increasingly linked to healthy skin and coat.

  • A dog's epidermis (stratum corneum) is thinner, and skin pH tends to be higher than the human acidic range (~5.5) (near-neutral to mildly alkaline) — though it varies by site, breed and method. Either way, human products don't match the pH or irritation level.
  • A "compound follicle" — one thick guard hair plus several fine undercoat hairs from a single follicle — is characteristic and the source of density and the two-layer structure.
  • The coat follows the hair cycle (anagen → catagen → telogen) and most dogs shed seasonally.
  • Sebaceous glands coat and moisturise the hair. Dogs have no whole-body (eccrine) sweat glands, and sebum oxidises easily.

Latest researchThe skin also hosts a commensal ecosystem (microbiome) whose make-up and balance affect skin health, as shown by gut/skin microbiome analysis in dogs (2023, Source).

Why shampoo matters (topical care)

Old sebum, dirt, allergens and microbes build up on the coat and skin. Left alone, they cause odour, itch and skin trouble.

Shampoo removes these and keeps the skin clean.

But don't over-wash. Stripping the skin's moisture can actually cause dryness and greasiness. Use a gentle dog shampoo and always finish with moisture.

Research Trials report that proper washing and bathing improved skin condition.

Oxidised sebum, dead skin, environmental dirt, allergens and microbes (bacteria, Malassezia) accumulate on coat and skin, leading to odour, itch, dermatitis and a dull coat.

Shampoo's role is to:

  • appropriately remove excess sebum, dirt, allergens and microbes, and balance the skin's microbiome;
  • deliver "topical" actives — moisturising, repairing, antimicrobial.

But over-washing backfires. Stripping stratum-corneum lipids (ceramides) breaks the barrier, water escapes (raised TEWL), and sebum is over-produced to compensate. So choose a low-irritant product matched to dog skin pH, and always replenish moisture after washing to restore the barrier.

How to wash properly (steps)

  1. Brush out loose hair and tangles (before wetting).
  2. Pre-rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water — most dirt comes off here (avoid hot water).
  3. Lather the dog shampoo first, then wash gently (no nails).
  4. Rinse until nothing remains (residue causes itch and flaking).
  5. Replenish the barrier with conditioner / moisture.
  6. Towel off, then dry on low heat (high heat and rough rubbing cause breakage).

Match the shampoo to the coat: white = whitening, sensitive skin = sensitive, oily = deep cleansing. When in doubt, start with the all-purpose base shampoo.Buy base shampoo

Latest researchA randomised controlled trial reported that an appropriate shampoo plus fine-bubble bathing improved skin scores (Taguchi 2024, Vet Dermatol. Source).

Why nutrition matters (inner care)

Hair is made of "protein". A beautiful coat is built from within.

  • Protein: the building block of hair
  • Good fats (omega-3 etc.): skin moisture and barrier
  • Antioxidants (astaxanthin etc.): protect from UV and ageing
  • Vitamins & zinc: build hair, keep colour
  • Gut health: "the skin mirrors the gut" — digestion affects coat and skin too.

Inner nutrition supports coat shine, volume and strength.

Research Omega-3 (fish oil) has reduced anti-itch medication doses, and gut care has improved skin, in reports.

The coat is mainly keratin (protein). A beautiful coat is built "from within"; nutrition supports what topical care can't reach.

  • Protein / amino acids (especially sulphur amino acids — methionine, cysteine): building blocks of keratin and collagen.
  • Essential fatty acids (omega-3/6): form skin-barrier lipids and act anti-inflammatory; deficiency brings dryness, dandruff and itch.
  • Antioxidants (astaxanthin, vitamin E/C): protect skin and coat from UV and oxidative stress; more important with age.
  • B vitamins (biotin etc.), zinc, copper: involved in keratinisation and pigmentation.
  • Gut environment (probiotics/prebiotics): affects the skin via the gut–skin axis ("the skin mirrors the gut").

Meeting these lifts coat quality, colour clarity, density and barrier function from within.

Latest researchA double-blind, placebo-controlled trial showed oral polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3) can reduce the needed dose of anti-itch medication — supporting inner lipid care (Schäfer 2024, Vet Dermatol. Source).

Skin barrier & “finish with moisture”

Dryness, greasiness and breakage usually share one root: a weakened skin barrier.

So whatever the condition, the rule is to finish every routine by sealing the barrier with moisture. Moisture from outside plus nutrition from within keeps the skin healthy.

Research The latest reviews confirm how important it is to support both the "skin barrier" and the "skin's microbial balance".

T.L.Cを購入

Not only dryness, but most cases of greasiness, breakage, dullness and sensitive skin trace back to impaired skin-barrier function. A weakened barrier raises TEWL (trans-epidermal water loss) and lets irritants and allergens in more easily.

So in every condition, the last step of washing and care should be to "restore the barrier with moisture". Pair topical moisture with lipids, antioxidants and nutrition from within to support the barrier on multiple fronts.

Moisturising in practice (how to protect it)

  • Always replenish after washing: follow shampoo with conditioner or a moisturising spray — never leave it "washed and bare".Buy T.L.C
  • For dryness and the ends: work in a little conditioning oil to protect the tips from damage.Buy Seabreeze Oil
  • Don't over-wash: match frequency to breed, season and condition, and avoid hot water and harsh cleansing (this protects barrier lipids).
  • From within: essential fatty acids (omega-3) are the raw material for barrier lipids — consider inner care if dryness or flaking persists.

Latest researchA recent review of the skin barrier, cutaneous microbiome and host-defence peptides also highlights the importance of barrier integrity and commensal balance (Santoro 2024, Vet Dermatol. Source).

Topical × Internal × Environmental care

Good care is a combination of three things.

  • From outside: shampoo, conditioner and so on
  • From within: nutrition and supplements
  • Environment: mind humidity, UV and over-washing

The "improvements" in this diagnosis are built around these three.

Evidence-based care works on three layers.

  • Topical: cleanse, repair, moisturise and protect with shampoo, conditioner and finishing products.
  • Internal: build the coat and barrier from within through protein, essential fatty acids, antioxidants and gut health.
  • Environmental: manage aggravating factors — humidity, UV, friction, wash frequency and allergens.

A concrete example routine

  • Topical: ① wash with a shampoo that suits the coat (white = whitening, sensitive skin = sensitive, etc.) → ② replenish the barrier with conditioner/moisture → ③ finish for shine, volume and anti-static.Buy Conditioner
  • Internal: a balanced daily diet, plus supplements as needed (MSM & Amino for keratin building blocks, FOR ANTIOXIDANT for antioxidant support).View supplement (Japan)
  • Environmental: keep humidity comfortable, avoid UV, friction and over-bathing, brush gently, and remove loose hair often during shedding seasons.

The "improvements" in this tool are proposed along these three layers.

How to bathe correctly
T.L.Cを購入

  • Brush before you bathe — mats tighten when wet and become impossible to remove.
  • Pre-rinse the whole body with lukewarm water (around 35°C, "cool" to your hand); this alone removes most of the dirt.
  • Dilute and lather the shampoo first — never apply it neat. Massage the skin gently.
  • Leftover residue causes trouble. Rinse until there is no slipperiness left.
  • Finish by moisturising with conditioner to protect the barrier.Buy T.L.C

Research Appropriate shampoo and bathing have been shown to help keep skin in good condition.

With shampooing, the method matters more than the detergent. The sequence is ① brush → ② pre-rinse → ③ diluted shampoo (double-wash if needed) → ④ contact time → ⑤ thorough rinse → ⑥ conditioner.

  • Water temperature: water that is too hot (over 40°C) strips barrier lipids and causes dryness and itch. Keep it lukewarm (35–38°C).
  • The pre-rinse does 80%: a careful pre-rinse removes most dirt and excess sebum. Skip it and the shampoo won't lather, so you use more.
  • Never apply neat shampoo: it causes irritation and residue. Dilute it into a lather first, then work it to the skin. For sebum or odour, double-wash (lift first, clean second).
  • Respect contact time: some medicated/functional shampoos need a few minutes to work (follow the label).
  • Rinsing is the most important step: residue causes greasiness, irritation and faster re-soiling. Don't leave any in the armpits, groin or paws.
  • Match frequency to condition: over-washing breaks the barrier; under-washing lets sebum oxidise. Adjust to breed, season and skin.

Latest researchA randomised controlled trial found that a commercial shampoo combined with fine-bubble bathing improved clinical scores in canine atopic dermatitis (Taguchi 2024, Vet Dermatol. Source) — evidence that the topical routine itself matters for the skin.

How hard vs soft water affects coat & skin

The same shampoo gives a different result depending on the water you wash with. The key is hard vs soft water (how much calcium and magnesium is dissolved in it).

  • Hard water (high mineral): lathers poorly and leaves soap scum (a mineral film) on the coat even after rinsing, making it rough, dull and tangle-prone. Residue on skin can also trigger itch and dryness.
  • Soft water (low mineral): lathers well, rinses easily and tends to leave a smoother finish.
  • Japan is mostly soft water, but some regions and parts of other countries (including parts of Australia) can be hard.
  • What to do: the harder the water, the more thorough the rinse. Reset mineral build-up periodically with a deep cleanse.Buy Deep Cleansing

Danby ら 2018, J Invest Dermatol.

"Water hardness" is easy to overlook in grooming, but it affects lathering, rinsing, finish and skin irritation alike. Hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) — the more there is, the "harder" the water.

① How hard water affects the coat (the chemistry)

  • Soap scum (lime soap) forms: Ca²⁺/Mg²⁺ react with cleansing surfactants to make an insoluble metal soap (soap scum) that films onto the hair and resists rinsing.
  • Less lather, wasted product: minerals kill the foam, so you add more shampoo in hard water — more residue, a vicious cycle.
  • Feel & look: the mineral + soap-scum film leaves the coat rough, dull, more static and tangle-prone. The comb drags, feeding mat-proneness.
  • Dullness of colour: on white/pale coats, mineral deposits show as yellowing and dullness.

② How hard water affects the skin (evidence)

  • More surfactant residue: washing in hard water leaves more cleansing residue on the skin and increases irritation, as shown in human studies (normal subjects and atopic patients; Danby et al. 2018, J Invest Dermatol. source).
  • Link with atopic dermatitis: epidemiology shows higher domestic water hardness is associated with more atopic dermatitis in infants (Perkin et al. 2016, J Allergy Clin Immunol. source), suggesting hard water can burden the skin barrier.
  • Caveat: these are mainly human studies. Rigorous canine data is still limited, but the mechanism — "mineral + surfactant residue irritates skin" — should apply to dogs too. Dogs have thinner, more delicate skin and are bathed often in grooming, so guarding against residue matters all the more.

③ Practice for soft vs hard water

  • Soft water (most of Japan): lathers and rinses well, so a shampoo can perform to its full potential. For amount and dilution, follow each product's label and official page (Plush Puppy's recommendations differ by product).
  • Hard water (some regions/overseas): ① rinse thoroughly (until all slipperiness is gone); ② deep-cleanse periodically to reset the mineral film and soap scum; ③ condition afterwards to restore feel and tame static; ④ a water-softening shower filter can help.Buy Deep Cleansing Buy T.L.C
  • Dull white/pale coats: mineral deposition may be the cause. Reset with a deep cleanse, then restore clarity with a whitening shampoo.

④ How to tell if your water is hard

  • Check your water utility's hardness figure, use a hardness test strip, or watch for poor lather and white limescale on taps and kettles. Easy limescale build-up signals harder water.

In short Hard water means "soap scum stays → roughness, dullness, tangling, skin irritation." The fix is thorough rinsing + periodic deep cleansing + good moisturising. Make the water work for you and the same products finish a level better.

EvidenceHuman studies report that hard water increases surfactant residue on skin and irritation (Danby 2018, J Invest Dermatol.) and that higher domestic water hardness is associated with more infant atopic dermatitis (Perkin 2016, J Allergy Clin Immunol.). Together with the importance of barrier and commensal balance (Santoro 2024, Vet Dermatol.), the consistent principle is "reduce residue, and moisturise after washing".

How to dry correctly

A damp, half-dry coat is the biggest enemy: trapped moisture lets microbes grow, causing itch, odour and skin trouble.

  • Blot, don't rub, with the towel — rubbing tangles the coat into mats.
  • With the dryer, avoid too much heat or holding it too close. Aim the air from the roots.
  • Brush as you dry, following the lie of the coat, for volume and shine.
  • Dry completely — the armpits, groin, paws and behind the ears are easy to miss.

Drying is an overlooked step that affects skin health even more than shampooing. Incomplete drying causes skin maceration, letting Malassezia and bacteria multiply and raising the risk of acute moist dermatitis (hot spots).

  • Towel drying: rubbing damages the cuticle and tangles the coat. Blot to absorb water well before moving to airflow.
  • Dryer heat: high heat for long periods causes dryness and barrier damage. Use medium heat at a distance and keep the air moving.
  • Brush-drying (fluff dry): aim air from the roots and brush along the coat with a slicker or pin brush as you dry, for volume, straightness and shine — essential for cotton and long coats.
  • Faster drying & less static: a blow-dry spray smooths the cuticle, cuts drying time and reduces frizz and static.Buy FAST Blow Dry
  • Hidden damp zones: armpits, groin, between the toes and behind the ears are the usual misses. Always check them last.

Tip Part the coat with your fingers to check it is dry to the skin. The surface often feels dry while the roots are still wet.

Latest researchA review highlights how the skin barrier and commensal balance underpin skin health (Santoro 2024, Vet Dermatol. Source). A half-dry coat disturbs that balance, driving microbial overgrowth and acute moist dermatitis (hot spots).

Brushing fundamentals
T.L.Cを購入
  • Brushing a dry coat hard snaps the hair. Always mist with a conditioning spray first.Buy T.L.C
  • The knack is to work in thin layers, from the roots out (line brushing).
  • Don't yank at mats — tease them apart a little at a time.
  • A little every day is the surest way to prevent mats.

Brushing isn't just tidying the coat — it also removes loose hair, boosts circulation, distributes sebum and prevents mats. Done wrong it causes breakage and skin abrasion, so technique matters.

  • Always moisturise first: dry-brushing causes static, breakage and cuticle damage. Add slip with a conditioning mist before you brush.
  • Line brushing: part the coat by hand and brush layer by layer, from the roots outward. Skimming the surface lets mats grow underneath.
  • Choose the right tool: slicker = loose hair/undercoat removal and de-matting; pin brush = lie of long coats; bristle = shine and finishing.Buy Soft Slicker
  • Don't press hard: a heavy slicker causes slicker burn (skin abrasion). Use a light wrist and don't catch the skin.
  • Frequency: short/single coats can be fine a few times a week; long and curly coats (Poodle, Bichon) are best brushed daily.

Tip Work the brush in from the tips a little at a time; if it catches, back off and hold the roots rather than forcing through — this protects both hair and skin.

Related researchA study in normal dogs examining body site, topical melatonin and brushing found brushing did not meaningfully change regrowth (Diaz 2006, Vet Dermatol. Source). The value of brushing lies not in "growing hair" but in managing shedding, sebum and mats.

Choosing tools & grooming "air" into the coat
  • One tool is never enough. Swap tools to suit the breed, the coat and the day's condition.
  • Use combs coarse-teeth first, then fine: the coarse comb opens the coat, the fine comb sets the lie.
  • With a pin brush, pin thickness is what matters: fine pins for fine hair, thicker pins for substantial coats.
  • Finish by "working air into the coat" — lift from the roots for a soft, three-dimensional look.Buy Pin Brush

T.L.Cを購入

The final difference in finish comes down to how you choose your tools and how you work air into the coat. Rather than finishing with one do-everything brush, lay out a proper tool set and swap between them by breed, coat type and condition — that's the professional baseline.

Combs: coarse first, then fine

  • Coarse teeth: open up tangles and loose hair across the whole coat first. Going straight to a fine comb snags and breaks hair.
  • Fine teeth: set the lie, tidy the furnishings and detail, and do the final mat check. The silhouette is decided at this stage.
  • By breed: on cotton coats (Poodle, Bichon) a fine comb shapes a rounded outline; on silky coats (Maltese, Yorkie) a free-running comb brings out shine and clean lines.

Pin brushes: choose by pin thickness

  • Fine pins: for fine, delicate hair (silky breeds, puppies). Low friction and strain, so they prevent breakage.
  • Thick pins: for substantial, dense coats, double coats and heavily curled cotton — they have the strength to reach the roots and lift the coat.
  • Beyond the pins: ball-tips, pin length and density, and the cushion's springiness all change the feel. The right thickness is one that enters lightly and slides out cleanly.Buy Soft Slicker

"Working air in" — what volume really is

  • The heart of a show finish is lifting the coat from the roots and creating a layer of air between the hairs. That air is what volume, dimension and lightness actually are.
  • How: brush in from the roots against the lie, or scoop upward from underneath. Pairing this with brush-drying (airflow + brush) maximises the air you trap.
  • Moisture first: dry hair won't hold air — it just tangles. Add slip before you try to lift it.Buy T.L.C
  • Lift vs. lay by breed: cotton coats are aired up to look round; silky coats have the air taken out to lay flat and shine. The same brush serves opposite goals.

Tip "Working air in" is about angle and direction, not force. Brush in the direction that lifts the roots, then lightly stroke along the lie to settle it — the coat stays full but holds its shape.

The science behind it"Volume" isn't just a feeling — it rests on measurable factors: follicle density, hair diameter and hair count. Follicle parameters in healthy dogs have been measured and shown to differ by breed and body site (Schuldenfrei 2020, Vet Dermatol. Source). The same coat can look different depending on how you air it because of this physical foundation.

Poodle setup for beginners (based on the breed standard)

A Poodle's curly coat keeps growing instead of shedding, so it mats if left alone. The round, even, springy coat the breed standard calls for is kept with a little daily care.

The five tools to start with: ① soft slicker ② comb (coarse + fine) ③ pin brush ④ conditioning spray ⑤ dryer

  • Daily: a mist of conditioner → line brushing (mat prevention).Buy T.L.C
  • Every 2–4 weeks: shampoo (volumising) → conditioner → dry thoroughly.Buy Body Building
  • When drying: aim air from the roots to work in air for a round shape (brush-dry).Buy FAST Blow Dry
  • Finishing: shape the outline with a comb, coarse then fine.Buy Volumising Cream
  • Every 4–6 weeks: a professional trim keeps the shape. Home care's job is to keep that shape mat-free.

T.L.Cを購入

Microbiol.

Poodle care makes sense once you understand the coat the breed standard describes — then even a home setup is coherent. Below is a step-by-step routine a beginner can follow, with the reasoning behind each step.

① What the standard asks for

  • The FCI breed standard (Poodle No.172) defines the curly coat as "profuse, fine, woolly, well curled, of good density, of even length, elastic and resistant to the pressure of the hand"; a corded variety is also recognised (FCI standard, source).
  • So the goal is a dense, springy, even roundness. Every step of care is built to reach and hold that state.
  • A home "quality" check: try the standard's "resistant to the pressure of the hand". Press the coat gently with your palm — if it springs back, the elasticity (body) is good. A slow or flat return signals dryness, under-nutrition, over-washing or damage.
  • Four sizes (Standard / Medium / Miniature / Toy). The coat is the same, but match the tool size to the dog (a mini slicker for Toys).

② Puppy coat → adult coat (the "coat change") is the peak mat period

  • Most Poodles transition from a soft puppy coat to a dense, springy adult coat at around 9–18 months. During this time two coat types coexist, shed puppy hair tangles into the adult coat, and it becomes the most mat-prone period of the dog's life.
  • Underlying this is the hair cycle: hairs entering telogen (rest) prepare to release (Müntener 2011, Vet Dermatol. source). Through the coat change, step brushing up a level (ideally daily, with detail checks).

③ Why daily care is needed (the mechanism)

  • Poodles shed little and keep growing, so loose hair stays in the coat. It wraps around the curly (helical) shafts and, with moisture and sebum, felts into mats.
  • So rather than removing mats after the fact, the core of Poodle care is daily line brushing to lift out shed hair and separate it before it tangles.

④ The tool set

  • Soft slicker (the workhorse for daily brushing); a mini slicker for Toys/small sizes.Buy Soft Slicker Buy Mini Slicker
  • Comb (coarse + fine): essential for finishing and the final mat check.
  • Pin brush: for furnishings and setting the lie.Buy Pin Brush
  • Conditioning spray & dryer: moisture is non-negotiable so you never brush dry hair.

⑤ The daily brushing routine (line brushing + the comb test)

  • 1. Always moisturise first: brushing a dry curly coat causes static, breakage and cuticle damage. Add slip with a conditioning mist first.Buy T.L.C
  • 2. Work in layers (line brushing): part the coat with your hand and brush from the exposed root line out to the tips, a section at a time, finishing the lower layer before the next. Skimming the surface lets mats grow underneath.
  • 3. Confirm with the comb test: after brushing, if a fine comb passes to the skin without catching, there are no mats. Anywhere it catches is a remaining mat. This is the final check every pro does — do it at home too.
  • 4. Don't press hard: a heavy slicker causes slicker burn (skin abrasion). Use a light wrist and don't catch the skin.

⑥ Shampoo (every 2–4 weeks)

  • Always brush before bathing (mats tighten when wet and won't come out).
  • Lukewarm water (35–38°C), dilute into a lather, rinse thoroughly. Double-wash for sebum or odour. A volumising shampoo builds body and density, making the standard's roundness easier.Buy Body Building
  • Add an intensive treatment for marked dryness or damage.Buy Coat Rescue
  • Why this frequency: over-washing strips barrier lipids; under-washing lets sebum oxidise and felt the coat. Around 2–4 weeks is a typical guide. Appropriate bathing has been shown to help skin condition (Taguchi 2024, Vet Dermatol. source).

⑦ Drying (most important — never air-dry)

  • Air-drying is wrong for Poodles: left wet, the curl shrinks and tightens and matting races ahead. A half-dry coat also macerates the skin, lets microbes grow and risks hot spots. The importance of the skin barrier and commensal balance is set out in review (Santoro 2024, Vet Dermatol. source).
  • Brush-dry: warm air from the roots while brushing with a slicker, working in air to lift the coat round — the foundation of the standard's silhouette.Buy FAST Blow Dry
  • Dry to the skin: armpits, groin, between the toes and behind the ears are the usual misses. Part the coat and check the roots.

⑧ Comb finishing (the round silhouette)

  • Open the coat with the coarse comb, then even out the outline with the fine comb. The silhouette is decided here.
  • Hold the roundness with volumising cream/spray.Buy Volumising Cream Buy Volumising Spray

⑨ Inner care (nutrition) is part of the foundation

  • Hair is mostly protein (keratin). Alongside quality protein, sulphur amino acids (methionine, cysteine) and MSM-derived sulphur support the disulfide bonds that give hair its strength; dietary MSM improved coat quality in cats (Front. Microbiol. 2022, source).Buy MSM & Amino
  • Omega-3 (essential fatty acids) are raw material for barrier lipids; inner care helps when dryness or flaking persists (Schäfer 2024, Vet Dermatol. source).

⑩ Area-by-area care (especially important in Poodles)

  • Ears: Poodles often grow hair in the ear canal and, with trapped moisture, are prone to otitis. Watch for heat and dirt; see a vet for redness, odour or scratching.
  • Around the eyes: prone to tear staining — keep clean and dry, never leave damp.
  • Feet & between the toes: mats and dirt collect here and can trigger licking. Keep trimmed and dry.
  • Sanitary (around the rear): keep short for hygiene; at home it's safest to leave clipper work to a pro.

⑪ Sharing the work with a pro (every 4–6 weeks)

  • Leave the standard clip (face, feet, tail shaping; clipper work) to a professional. Home care's role is to keep that shape mat-free and full.

⑫ Signs that warrant a vet visit

  • Widespread or symmetrical hair thinning / persistent skin redness, itching, odour or flaking / repeatedly bothered ears — for these, see a vet before reaching for products. Don't try to manage skin disease with grooming products alone.

In short Aim for the standard's roundness and the sequence is clear even for a beginner: prevent mats with daily brushing (confirmed by the comb test) → wash correctly and dry completely → work in air for roundness → support the foundation with nutrition → maintain the shape with a professional trim. Step care up during the coat change.

Why mats form — understand the mechanism to prevent them

Mats form in three steps. Knowing the cause makes the "why" of daily care obvious.

  • ① Shed hair doesn't fall out: in low-shedding breeds like Poodles and Bichons, or in double-coats during the moult, loose hair stays inside the coat.
  • ② It tangles with growing hair: at high-friction sites (armpits, collar line, behind the ears), loose hair wraps around the hair still in place.
  • ③ It felts together: add moisture, sebum and movement, and the hairs felt into each other. Once felted, mats are hard to open.

So daily brushing = "lifting out shed hair" + "separating it before it tangles". That's the strongest prevention.Buy Soft Slicker

Research The shed hairs are those that have entered the resting (telogen) phase of the hair cycle. Mats surge during the moult because this hair surges all at once (Source).

T.L.Cを購入

Matting has a clear biological and physical mechanism. Once you see it, you can tell which step of care is doing the preventing.

① The starting point: the hair cycle and "shed hair that doesn't fall"

  • Hair cycles through anagen (growth) → catagen (transition) → telogen (rest). Hairs in telogen are set up to release from the follicle (Müntener 2011, Vet Dermatol. source).
  • In low-shedding breeds (Poodle, Bichon, Maltese), telogen hairs don't fall out — they stay in the coat tangled with surrounding hair. In double-coats, the moult drops a huge volume of telogen hair at once and the undercoat tangles inside.
  • So the raw material of every mat is essentially this "shed-but-not-fallen" hair.

② The foundation: the compound follicle

  • A canine follicle is typically compound: one guard hair plus several undercoat hairs share a single follicle (this is why coats are dense). Adjacent bundles sit very close together.
  • Follicle density and hair count vary widely by breed and body site — denser coats give matting more substrate to grip onto (Schuldenfrei 2020, Vet Dermatol. source).
  • Curly coats (Poodle, Bichon) have helical hair shafts, so shed and growing hairs entangle physically even before any other factor.

③ The bond: the felting mechanism

  • The outermost layer of every hair (the cuticle) is a scaled, fish-scale-like overlap. This is the physical heart of "matting".
  • When hairs touch, rub and pick up moisture, the cuticle scales catch on each other in one direction only, so they don't release — they weave together. This is exactly the same mechanism by which wool "felts" (a directional lock).
  • So a mat is shed and growing hairs woven into each other via their cuticle scales. That's why pulling doesn't undo it — it only tightens it.

④ Accelerators: moisture, sebum, friction, static

  • Moisture: cuticle scales lift, and tangling accelerates dramatically. Leaving the coat wet, or rubbing it half-dry, is the worst combination — which is why complete drying after a bath is non-negotiable (Santoro 2024, Vet Dermatol. source).
  • Sebum: oxidised sebum becomes sticky and glues hair to hair. Both under-washing and over-washing (which damages the barrier and overproduces sebum) feed this.
  • Friction: collars, harnesses, armpits, groin, behind the ears and the limb joints concentrate mechanical stress. Movement twists the bundles and accelerates felting.
  • Static and dryness: in low humidity (winter, indoor heating), the coat charges and clings to itself — one reason mats spike in winter.

⑤ Why breed and coat type matter

  • Very prone: Poodle, Bichon, Maltese (curl + low shedding).
  • Prone: double-coats during the moult; long silky coats (Yorkie, Shih Tzu).
  • Less prone: smooth coats (short hair, less substrate).

⑥ Which step of care prevents which factor

  • Daily line brushing physically removes ① the "shed-but-trapped" hair — the raw material.Buy Soft Slicker
  • Conditioning spray smooths ③ the cuticle so scales don't catch as easily.Buy T.L.C
  • Correct shampoo + complete drying cuts off ④ sebum and moisture, stopping felting before it starts.
  • Anti-static blocks ④ the static charge that drives winter tangling.Buy Anti-Static

In short Mats arise from "shed hair that doesn't fall + dense follicle substrate + cuticle-scale felting + moisture/sebum/friction/static". The most rational way to organise daily care is to cut each of these four factors off, one by one.

Mat-proneness — breed & individual variation, and how to judge it

Even within one breed, some dogs mat easily and others don't. Knowing your dog's type lets you set the right brushing frequency.

  • Why Poodles are prone: "low-shedding" means shed hair stays in the coat instead of falling out, plus the curl tangles and the coat keeps growing. The very trait that makes them low-shed makes them mat-prone.
  • Prone coats: soft, cotton-candy-like, dense, tightly curled.
  • Less-prone coats: springy and resilient — the "good coat" the breed standard asks for actually mats less.
  • How to judge at home: ① does a comb pass to the skin? ② does the coat spring back when pressed? ③ does a section ball up quickly when rubbed between fingers? The faster it balls, the more it needs daily brushing.

T.L.Cを購入

Mat-proneness isn't luck — it's explained by the coat's structure, quality and condition. On top of breed differences there is large individual variation, so "judging" your own dog and tuning care frequency is the world-standard approach.

① Why Poodles mat (despite being low-shedding)

  • Shed hair doesn't fall out: Poodles have a long hair cycle, and hairs that reach telogen tend to stay in the coat rather than dropping (Müntener 2011, Vet Dermatol. source). This "shed-but-retained" hair is the raw material of mats — the flip side of "low shedding = easy cleanup".
  • Helical (curly) shaft: curls physically interlock with neighbours and lock faster than straight hair.
  • Keeps growing: a single coat that grows rather than fully moulting means more length, and more length means more friction and tangling.
  • High density: the denser the compound follicles, the more substrate for tangling. Follicle density and diameter vary by breed and site (Schuldenfrei 2020, Vet Dermatol. source).

② Individual variation — what separates prone from non-prone dogs

  • Coat quality (most important): soft, cotton-candy (over-cottony) coats mat the most. The springy, resilient coat that resists hand pressure — what the standard wants — mats less, even in the same breed.
  • Density & curl tightness: denser and more tightly curled tangles more.
  • Life stage: puppy coat and the coat change (around 9–18 months) are the most prone; some seniors change texture too.
  • Hormones & health: after neutering, the coat can soften (more cottony) and mat more; endocrine disease (e.g. hypothyroidism) alters coat and sebum; oily skin glues hairs together.
  • Dryness & static: dry hair tangles; winter/heating worsens it with charge. Conditioning makes a big difference.
  • Friction, gear & lifestyle: always-on collar/harness, very active dogs and bedding material all change the picture.
  • Care history & genetics: daily brushing habits and line-based coat tendencies matter.

③ How to judge it (four home checks)

  • 1. Comb test: does a fine comb pass to the skin without catching? The more it catches, the more prone (or already progressing). The most reliable basic check.
  • 2. Elasticity test (the standard's "resistant to hand pressure"): press gently with your palm — springs back = good body = less prone. A slow, flat or sticky return means a soft coat = more prone.
  • 3. Rub test: lightly rub a tuft between your fingertips and watch whether it balls up quickly. The faster it balls, the higher the tendency.
  • 4. Recurrence map: note whether mats keep returning to the same spots (armpits, groin, behind ears, under the collar). Recurring sites are high-friction = priority care areas.

④ Set care frequency from what you find

  • Prone (cottony, dense, comb catches often): daily line brushing + moisture essential; step up further in moult/coat-change.Buy Soft Slicker
  • Average (springy, occasional catch): every 2–3 days + a daily check of the hot spots.Buy T.L.C
  • Less prone (firm body, comb glides): every few days can maintain it — but still check the prone areas.

In short Mat-proneness is set by coat quality (softness) × density × curl × condition (dryness, sebum, hormones). Judge your own dog with the comb / elasticity / rub tests, and the more prone the coat, the more brushing should be daily — the shortest route to care that's neither too much nor too little.

The science behind itFollicle density and hair diameter vary by breed and site (Schuldenfrei 2020, source), and the retention of shed telogen hair is explained by the hair cycle (Müntener 2011, source). A coat that is "elastic and resistant to hand pressure" is also the standard's marker of a good-quality coat (FCI standard, source).

Preventing & handling mats
  • Mats form where there is friction (armpits, groin, under the collar, behind the ears).
  • Always tease them out before wetting or drying — water shrinks them into felt.
  • Soften an existing mat with a conditioning spray or oil, split it with your fingers, then brush.Buy Coat Rescue
  • For bad matting, see a professional rather than forcing it — pulling damages the skin.

T.L.Cを購入

Mats are more than cosmetic — left in place they cause dermatitis, restricted circulation, pain and self-trauma. The rule is simple: "prevent before they form" rather than "remove after". Here is both prevention and handling, in enough detail for a beginner to follow.

■ Common sites (check these first)

  • High-friction, high-movement areas: armpits, groin, neck (under the collar/harness), behind the ear flaps, between the toes, elbows, base of the tail and around the rear.
  • These rub against skin, gear or the ground. Make a daily check a habit and you catch mats while they are still buds.

■ Prevention (the best cure) — five pillars

  • ① Daily line brushing: the core of prevention. Part the coat in layers, brush roots to tips, then run the comb test (a fine comb passing to the skin without catching = no mats). Anywhere it catches is a budding mat.Buy Soft Slicker
  • ② Always moisturise before brushing: dry hair tangles with static and snaps. A conditioning mist adds slip, reduces cuticle catching and makes felting less likely.Buy T.L.C
  • ③ Reduce friction sources: a tight, always-on collar or harness is a mat factory. Check the fit, avoid long continuous wear, and brush the area after removing it. Bedding material (low-snag) matters too.
  • ④ Get the bath sequence right: always tease mats out before bathing (water tightens them), and afterwards dry completely with a brush-dry — never half-dry or air-dry. Leaving the coat wet is the worst condition for felting.
  • ⑤ Step up during the moult: when shedding surges, increase undercoat removal (slicker/rake) and brushing frequency. In winter, anti-static is also prevention.Buy Anti-Static

■ Handling (how to remove a mat that has formed)

The master rule is "soften, a little at a time, protect the roots, and work dry." Follow the order and you remove it painlessly with the hair intact.

  • STEP 1 | Assess: pinch the mat and check whether there is a gap between it and the skin. If there is, you can handle it at home. If it traps the skin and won't move, or the skin is red or painful, don't force it — see a pro or vet.
  • STEP 2 | Soften: work a detangling spray or conditioning oil well into the mat and leave it 1–2 minutes to loosen the fibres. Never pick at it dry.Buy Seabreeze Oil
  • STEP 3 | Split with your fingers: tear the mat lengthwise into thin strands along the lie of the coat, breaking the clump into small bundles. Don't try to take it all at once — turn the lump into "a set of thin strands".
  • STEP 4 | Hold the roots and brush: with one hand hold the base of the mat firmly at the skin; with the other, work a slicker/comb from the tips inward, a little at a time. Holding the roots keeps the pull off the skin.
  • STEP 5 | Outside → in: free the loosened outer hairs first and move gradually toward the core. Never prise it open from the centre.
  • STEP 6 | Final check: confirm the comb passes to the skin. You can then shampoo (always after de-matting). Finish with complete drying.

■ What never to do when de-matting

  • Wetting it to remove it: water shrinks the fibres and tightens the mat (this is different from "softening" with oil/spray).
  • Cutting the base with scissors: skin is often lifted up into the mat, so this very commonly causes skin lacerations — avoid at home.
  • Yanking it out by force: causes pain, follicle damage and slicker burn. "Split it finely" instead.
  • Drying with the mat still in: heat and friction tighten it further.

■ Signs to leave it to a pro or vet

  • Blanket-like matting over the body / a mat that traps skin and won't move / skin that is red, weeping, smelly or painful. These may hide dermatitis, abrasion or infection beneath. Forcing removal risks tearing — this needs examination and safe clipper work.

Tip The three big don'ts of handling a mat: pulling, wetting, and drying it in place — each one tightens it. Conversely, soften / split / protect the roots / work dry is how you remove it safely.

The science behind itA mat starts when hairs that have shed in the telogen (resting) phase of the hair cycle tangle with hairs still growing. Criteria for assessing the canine hair cycle, including how resting hairs are retained and released, have been described (Müntener 2011, Vet Dermatol. Source). Mats increase during the moult because this shed hair surges all at once. Complete drying matters because a half-dry coat disturbs the skin barrier and commensal balance (Santoro 2024, Vet Dermatol. Source).

Seasonal care (moult, summer, winter)
  • Moulting (spring & autumn): double-coated dogs shed heavily — brush often to clear loose hair.
  • Summer: sebum, sweat and humidity bring greasiness, odour and trapped heat. Keep clean and dry thoroughly.
  • Winter: more dryness and static. Reach for moisture and anti-static.Buy Anti-Static
  • In the southern hemisphere (e.g. Australia) the seasons are reversed — choose by the season you're actually in.

T.L.Cを購入

Coat and skin change with the seasons. Switching care to suit the climate you're actually in is the world-standard approach to grooming.

  • Seasonal shedding (the moult): shedding is triggered mainly by photoperiod (day length) and is pronounced in double-coated breeds. Remove undercoat with a slicker or rake and bathe to release loose hair, preventing mats and trapped heat.
  • Summer: heat and humidity oxidise sebum and favour Malassezia, leading to seborrhoea and odour. Keep clean and dry completely. A degreasing shampoo helps when greasy, but over-washing backfires.
  • Winter: low humidity dries the barrier and raises TEWL, with more static (fly-away). Step up moisture and use anti-static to control charge.Buy T.L.C
  • Mind the hemisphere: the moult and dry seasons are reversed between north and south, so the calendar months differ between Japan and Australia. Judge by "is it dry / is it moulting now", not by the month.

RelatedIn normal dogs, light (the light/dark cycle) influences the hair cycle and moult, while brushing and topicals have only a limited effect on regrowth itself (Diaz 2006, Vet Dermatol. Source). It's practical to view seasonal care as "managing shedding, heat and dryness" rather than "driving regrowth".

The hair cycle
Fig: the hair cycle

Hair repeats a cycle of "grows → stops → rests → falls out".

  • Poodles and Maltese keep growing (little shedding, so they need clipping).
  • Shiba and Pomeranians have a long resting phase and shed heavily by season.

The role of light: the hair cycle is driven by daylength (light). Managing lighting with a timer can, to some extent, control shedding — mainly in double-coated breeds (limited effect in single-coated breeds).

Research Hair renewal — and how long regrowth takes after clipping — has been studied in detail.

Microbiol.

The hair cycle repeats anagen (growth) → catagen (regression) → telogen (resting) → exogen (shedding).

  • Dogs are basically mosaic — each follicle at a different phase — but daylight, season and hormones (e.g. melatonin) can synchronise them, causing seasonal shedding.
  • Anagen-dominant breeds (Poodle, Maltese, etc.) keep growing hair, shed little and need trimming.
  • Telogen-dominant breeds (double-coated Shiba, Pomeranian, etc.) have a long resting phase and shed heavily by season.

Controlling it with light (daylength) — "lighting"

The hair cycle is driven by daylength (photoperiod) more than temperature, regulated via light to the eye and the rise and fall of melatonin. Some handlers use this — managing lighting with a timer to control shedding and coat, mainly in show dogs.

  • To reduce shedding and "hold" the coat: keep a long, consistent light period (guide: lights on at the same time daily for 14+ hours of light). Long days suppress melatonin, discouraging winter-coat building and shedding.
  • To encourage winter coat / density: lengthen the dark period (toward short days: under 12 hours of light). Melatonin rises, favouring undercoat growth.
  • Important: keep a consistent daily rhythm. Unnaturally long lighting causes stress and disrupts circadian rhythm. Change gradually, over weeks — not abruptly.

What single-coated breeds should do (nutrition & care over light): Poodle, Maltese and similar single-coated breeds grow continuously with weak seasonality, so lighting has a limited effect. Keeping and growing a good coat rests on three pillars:

  • Nutrition (supply the building blocks): quality protein + sulphur amino acids (methionine, cysteine) + essential fatty acids (omega-3/6) + zinc, copper, biotin.Buy MSM & Amino (Japan)
  • Manage underlying disease: hypothyroidism, Cushing's, allergies, parasites and skin infections all reduce coat quality and density. See a vet for worrying changes.
  • Prevent breakage: gentle brushing, moisture/repair treatments, and avoiding static, friction and high-heat drying — to "keep" the length and density already there.

Medical option: melatonin (mimicking the short-day signal) can produce partial-to-full regrowth in about 30–40% of dogs with alopecia X or recurrent flank alopecia. In normal dogs, however, a controlled study found topical melatonin and brushing made no significant difference to regrowth — effects are not uniform. Always under veterinary guidance.

Can MSM & Amino Complete replace melatonin? They act at different points. Melatonin works on the hair cycle (promoting the telogen→anagen shift) — a hormonal approach for cyclic alopecias (e.g. alopecia X). MSM & Amino is a nutritional approach that supplies the building blocks: sulphur amino acids (cysteine, methionine) and MSM-derived sulphur are essential for the disulfide bonds that give keratin — hair's main component — its strength. Dietary MSM improved coat quality in cats (Ragdoll kittens) (Front. Microbiol. 2022, Source), with supportive signals in human and animal models (rigorous canine data still limited). So it is not a "replacement" for melatonin but a complementary approach supporting hair quality, strength and the substrate for growth — central for single-coated breeds where light has little effect.Buy MSM & Amino (Japan)

"It contains tryptophan — won't that become melatonin in the body?" Biosynthetically, yes (tryptophan → 5-HTP → serotonin → melatonin). However, pineal melatonin synthesis is tightly gated to the dark phase, and "light (darkness)" — not tryptophan supply — is the rate-limiting factor (Food Nutr. Res. 2012, Source). Dietary-level tryptophan does not push blood melatonin to the pharmacologic levels (a few mg per dose) used for conditions like alopecia X. Dietary tryptophan is also partitioned across many fates — protein synthesis, niacin (NAD) production, serotonin — only a small share is converted to pineal melatonin. So the tryptophan in MSM & Amino is useful as part of the essential-amino-acid pool that builds hair, but it does not replace melatonin therapy. To act on the hair cycle directly when needed, use pharmaceutical melatonin under veterinary guidance.

Caution Lighting protocols in dogs are backed by limited controlled trials and rely partly on equine photoperiod research, endocrine physiology and breeder practice. Treat the hours as a guide and watch the individual's response.

Latest researchIn normal dogs, topical melatonin and brushing made no significant difference to regrowth after clipping (Diaz 2006, Vet Dermatol. Source). Extended photoperiod activating moulting has been shown in horses (2020, Source).

Growth rate & regrowth time

How fast hair grows varies greatly with breed, season and body region.

Regrowth after clipping typically takes weeks to months, and is influenced by nutrition, hormones and overall health.

Rough guide: hair grows about a few mm to ~1 cm per month (depending on breed and site). Dogs tend to shed the winter coat in spring, though indoor living can blur this seasonality.

To grow it well: meet nutritional needs (protein, essential fatty acids, zinc, etc.), keep the skin healthy and prevent breakage. But you can't beat the genetically set ceiling, and underlying disease slows growth — see a vet if you're concerned.

A hair's final length is set by the length of its anagen (growth) phase. Growth rate varies with breed, region, season, age, nutrition and hormones.

  • Regrowth after clipping is generally weeks to months.
  • In double-coated breeds, delayed regrowth — "post-clipping alopecia" — is well known.
  • Under-nutrition and conditions such as hypothyroidism slow growth.

How fast it grows (reference figures)

  • In healthy dogs, an image-analysis pilot study reported an average of about 0.06 mm/day (≈ just under 2 mm per month) (Schuldenfrei 2020). This varies widely by site and individual; a common rough guide is a few mm to about 1 cm per month.
  • Breed differences show up less in "mm per day" and more in how long hair keeps growing (the length of anagen).
  • Long-coated breeds (Poodle, Maltese, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier, etc.): anagen lasts years, so hair keeps growing and needs regular clipping.
  • Short-coated breeds (Labrador, Beagle, Boxer, etc.): anagen is short and telogen (resting) predominates, so hair stops at a set short length and "doesn't keep growing".
  • Single-coated vs double-coated: single-coated breeds (Poodle, Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, etc.) have little undercoat and keep growing — a "hair type" with little seasonal shedding that needs regular trimming and regrows fairly readily even after clipping to the skin. Double-coated breeds (Pomeranian, Shiba, Corgi, Golden, etc.) have a top + undercoat, shed strongly with the seasons, and risk delayed regrowth — "post-clipping alopecia" — if shaved to the skin.

How to grow a better coat (growing it healthily)

  • You can't beat the genetic ceiling. Final length and speed are set by anagen duration; no diet or drug grows hair "beyond the breed's limit". What you can do is remove the things that hold growth back and draw out the full potential.
  • Nutrition (most important): hair is ~95% protein (keratin). Provide adequate quality protein + essential fatty acids (omega-3/6) + zinc, copper, biotin and vitamins A/E and B. Under-nutrition slows growth.Buy MSM & Amino (Japan)
  • Treat underlying disease: hypothyroidism, Cushing's, parasites, allergies and skin infections all slow regrowth. Treating them is the most reliable "growth booster".
  • Keep skin and follicles healthy: control itch, inflammation and scratching, avoid over-washing, and maintain the barrier with moisture. Healthy skin grows healthy hair.
  • Don't damage follicles: avoid shaving double-coated breeds to the skin, which can trigger "post-clipping alopecia".
  • Make it "look longer": reducing breakage, friction, static and high-heat drying preserves the length already grown, so the coat looks longer.Buy Seabreeze Oil
  • Medical options: in some conditions (e.g. alopecia X), a vet may use melatonin or similar to help regrowth — don't self-treat; always see a vet.

Key point Real "growth promotion" means meeting nutritional needs and treating underlying disease to restore the hair's natural growth. There is no magic way to exceed the genetic ceiling.

Is there seasonality?

  • The canine hair cycle is seasonal, regulated mainly by daylength (photoperiod) via melatonin and prolactin. The change in daylength matters more than temperature.
  • Spring: as days lengthen and melatonin falls, the winter undercoat is shed all at once — the spring "blow-out". Autumn: as days shorten, anagen extends to build a denser winter coat.
  • However, indoor living (artificial light, climate control) blunts the seasonal signal, so seasonality becomes unclear and shedding can be year-round. Indeed, one study found no seasonal difference in regrowth rate in indoor-housed Labradors (Diaz 2004). Seasonality shows up mainly in when dogs shed and in undercoat density, rather than as a clean "x cm per season" figure.

Note: actual growth rates and shedding timing vary widely by individual, body site and housing, and cannot be reduced to a single figure.

Latest researchAn image-analysis pilot study evaluating hair-follicle parameters and growth rate in healthy dogs (Schuldenfrei 2020, Vet Dermatol. Source). After clipping, no seasonal difference in regrowth was found in indoor-housed Labradors (Diaz 2004, Vet Dermatol. Source).

Coat colour & hair quality

Coat colour is set by the type of pigment (melanin), and colour also changes the hair's constitution.

  • Dilute colours (blue/fawn): hair can be weak and breakage-prone (colour dilution alopecia). Use gentle care.
  • Black/dark: prone to reddish-brown fading from sun and oxidation → antioxidants and UV protection.
  • White/pale: dullness and tear-staining show easily → whitening plus antioxidants.

Research "Colour dilution alopecia", where pale hair turns brittle, has been mapped down to its genetics (how pigment is transported).

Melanin comes in eumelanin (black–brown) and phaeomelanin (red–yellow), and affects not only colour but hair quality.

  • Dilute colours (blue, fawn): melanin can clump within the shaft and make hair brittle — colour dilution alopecia (CDA). Avoid over-brushing; use gentle, moisture- and repair-focused care.
  • Black/dark: fades (reddens) easily under UV and oxidation → antioxidants (e.g. astaxanthin), UV protection and shampoos made for black coats.
  • White/pale: porphyrin (tear stains) and oxidative yellowing show easily → whitening plus antioxidant care, inside and out.

How to respond: you can't change the colour itself, but care tailored to each colour's weak points minimises fading, dullness and breakage. Across the board it helps to not over-wash, moisturise well, use antioxidants (inner care) and avoid UV and friction. If a dilute coat starts thinning or develops pigment spots, see a vet rather than self-diagnosing.

Latest researchIn dilute coats, the MLPH gene is linked to melanin clumping that weakens hair (J Hered. 2009, Source), with a recent clinical update on colour dilution alopecia (CDA) (2025, Source).

Coat texture (harsh vs soft)
Harsh (thick) Soft (fine)
Fig: difference in hair diameter (schematic)

Harsh hair is thick and springy — the wiry coat of terriers and the like. Soft hair is fine and supple.

Harsh coats keep their true texture through plucking (hand-stripping) rather than clipping (clipping gradually softens and fades them).

To firm up the coat: hair that has already grown can't be made harsh again, but not over-washing, moisturising well, good protein and essential-fatty-acid nutrition, and repair treatments keep both the current and newly growing hair in good condition.

Harsh hair (wiry): large diameter, thick cuticle and cortex and a developed medulla → excellent body, water- and dirt-resistance. In terriers and similar breeds, the true texture is kept by hand-stripping resting-phase hairs by hand (clipping gradually softens and fades it).

Soft hair: fine diameter with a higher proportion of secondary (undercoat) hairs, making it supple.

Hair quality is set by both genetic predisposition and grooming method.

How to firm up the coat

  • Hair that has already grown is "dead tissue" and can't be made harsh again, but you can improve the quality of newly growing hair and the condition of the current coat.
  • Nutrition (inner): quality protein, essential fatty acids (omega-3/6), zinc, copper and biotin are the raw materials for keratin.Buy MSM & Amino (Japan)
  • Repair & protection (outer): repair treatments such as silk protein, avoiding over-washing, and low-heat, low-friction drying protect the cuticle.Buy Silk Protein
  • Building texture: in wiry breeds, hand-stripping maintains the true body; texturising / body-building shampoos give a temporary boost in body.
  • If hair suddenly becomes fine or soft, suspect an endocrine disorder or under-nutrition → consult a vet.
Coat density

Coat density depends on the number of pores, how many fine (undercoat) hairs grow from each pore, and the share of hairs in the growth phase.

It changes with breed, age, nutrition, hormones and season.

How to build coat volume: you can't add more pores (that's inborn), but nutrition, reducing shedding and breakage, and good health management draw out the most "apparent density" you can. Symmetrical thinning or widespread hair loss can be a sign of disease.

Coat density is set by follicles per unit area + the number of secondary (undercoat) hairs in each compound follicle + the proportion of anagen (growth-phase) hairs.

  • Double coats are dense, with many secondary (undercoat) hairs.
  • Single-coated breeds have little undercoat, so density is structurally lower. This is a breed trait — rather than trying to "add" volume, it's more realistic to prevent breakage and make the coat look full through shine and neatness.
  • Density falls with ageing, under-nutrition, endocrine disorders (thyroid, adrenal, etc.) and during shedding seasons.

How to build coat volume

  • The number of follicles is set by genetics and can't be increased later. However, returning resting-phase follicles to a healthy growth phase and reducing shedding and breakage maximises apparent density.
  • Nutrition: protein, omega-3/6, zinc, copper, biotin and various vitamins support growth-phase hair.Buy MSM & Amino (Japan)
  • Health management: control endocrine issues (thyroid, adrenal) and fleas, mites and allergies — all major causes of reduced density.
  • Preventing breakage: gentle brushing, moisturising, anti-static and anti-friction care, and an appropriate (not excessive) wash frequency.
  • Finishing: volumising products lift the roots for a temporary boost in apparent volume.Buy Volumising Spray
  • Symmetrical thinning or widespread hair loss can signal a hormonal disorder → see a vet.

Key point You can't add follicles (the ceiling on density), but nutrition and good health management that increase growth-phase hairs and reduce shedding and breakage genuinely change the apparent density. For single-coated breeds, shine and neatness are the quicker win over raw density.

Hair-loss conditions (warning signs)

The following may be signs of illness. Please consult a vet promptly.

  • Sudden hair loss or thinning
  • Symmetrical hair loss
  • Itching, redness, flaking or odour

Shampoo and nutrition keep a healthy coat healthy — they do not cure disease.

Research The causes of hair loss are professionally classified, with guidelines to help vets diagnose them.

Main alopecic conditions (examples of differentials):

  • Endocrine: hypothyroidism, hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's), sex-hormone related — tend to be symmetrical with little itching.
  • Parasitic / infectious: demodicosis (Demodex), sarcoptic mange, dermatophytosis (ringworm), bacterial pyoderma.
  • Allergic / atopic: atopic dermatitis, food allergy, flea allergy — hair loss from scratching.
  • Genetic / structural: colour dilution alopecia (CDA), alopecia X (Pomeranian, etc.), pattern baldness, post-clipping alopecia.
  • Nutritional / autoimmune: zinc-responsive dermatosis, pemphigus, and others.

These are not "cured" by shampoo or nutrition — they require diagnosis and treatment. If you notice worrying hair loss or skin changes, see a vet rather than self-diagnosing.

What you can do at home / when to see a vet

  • At home: cleanliness and moisture, balanced nutrition, flea and mite prevention, and reducing stress and excessive scratching. These build the foundation of a healthy coat — they do not treat disease.
  • See a vet promptly if hair loss is symmetrical, spreads quickly, or comes with itching, redness, pus, odour or flaking; darkened or thickened skin; or systemic signs such as lethargy or increased thirst/urination.

Pinpointing the cause uses not just inspection but skin scrapings, hair exams, fungal culture, blood/hormone tests and skin biopsy. The vet-reviewed differential-diagnosis and disease database "vetdict.info" is also a useful reference.

Latest research takeaways

Research keeps pointing in one direction: combinations beat any single "miracle". The main recent takeaways:

  • Shampoo "method" makes a difference: correct bathing improves skin scores.
  • Don't over-wash; always moisturise after: protect the skin barrier and the "good microbe balance".
  • Omega-3 (e.g. fish oil) has been reported to reduce the dose of anti-itch medication needed.
  • Gut care (probiotics) may also lift skin condition.
  • Volume is the physical product of "follicle density × hair diameter × hair count".
  • Normal regrowth itself isn't meaningfully changed by brushing or routine topicals (their value lies elsewhere).
  • Coat colour and genetics shift coat quality and hair-loss risk (e.g. dilute → CDA).
  • Hard water is linked to skin irritation in human studies (the canine picture is still inferred).

The current science supports treating outside, inside, gut and environment at the same time.

Microbiol.

Res.

The whole approach of this hub (topical × internal × environmental + gut + finish with moisture) is increasingly backed by recent research. The main evidence is grouped by theme below. Most studies are in atopic dermatitis, but the findings translate to maintaining healthy skin and coat.

① Topical care — "method" changes the skin

  • An RCT in which a commercial shampoo combined with fine-bubble bathing improved clinical scores in canine atopic dermatitis (Taguchi 2024, Vet Dermatol. Source).
  • Implication: it isn't only the product — temperature, dilution, contact time and rinsing all act on the skin.

② Skin barrier and the commensal balance

  • A recent review of the skin barrier, cutaneous microbiome and host-defence peptides (Santoro 2024, Vet Dermatol. Source).
  • Implication: healthy skin is defended by a physical barrier + a commensal ecosystem + antimicrobial peptides. Over-washing and under-moisturising disturb all three at once. The consistent rule is "don't over-wash; always moisturise after."

③ Inner care — lipid nutrition (omega-3)

  • A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial showing that oral polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3) can reduce the required dose of oclacitinib (Schäfer 2024, Vet Dermatol. Source).
  • Implication: omega-3 is also raw material for barrier lipids — supporting the rationale for pairing topical and internal care.

④ Inner care — sulphur and amino acids (raw material for hair)

  • Dietary MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) improved coat quality in Ragdoll kittens (Front. Microbiol. 2022, Source).
  • Implication: hair's strength (the disulfide bonds in keratin) depends on sulphur amino acids (methionine, cysteine) and MSM-derived sulphur. Rigorous canine data remain limited, but the nutritional rationale is sound.Buy MSM & Amino

⑤ Gut–skin axis — the frontier

  • Probiotics corrected gut dysbiosis and improved skin signs (BMC Microbiol. 2025, Source).
  • Comprehensive gut/skin microbiome analysis in Shiba Inu is advancing (2023, Source).
  • Implication: "settle the gut and the skin lifts" is now being demonstrated in dogs — an active frontier.Buy probiotics

⑥ Hair cycle & follicle quantification — the "physics of volume"

  • Criteria for assessing the canine hair cycle (anagen → catagen → telogen) (Müntener 2011, Vet Dermatol. Source).
  • Analysis of regrowth after clipping (Diaz 2004, Vet Dermatol. Source).
  • Follicle parameters (density, diameter) measured with TrichoScale Pro in healthy dogs (Schuldenfrei 2020, Vet Dermatol. Source).
  • Implication: volume = follicle density × hair diameter × hair count — the physical foundation of how a coat looks is becoming measurable. "Roundness" and "loft" aren't just feel.

⑦ Light, melatonin and nutrition — what really drives regrowth

  • In normal Siberian Huskies, the effect of body site, topical melatonin and brushing on regrowth was studied — in normal dogs the effect on regrowth itself was limited (Diaz 2006, Vet Dermatol. Source).
  • Pineal melatonin secretion is dominated by light (dark) rather than dietary tryptophan levels (Peuhkuri 2012, Food Nutr. Res. Source).
  • Molecular mechanisms of hair-cycle dysregulation in cyclic alopecia (alopecia X) are being mapped (Source).
  • Implication: brushing's value isn't growing hair — it's managing shedding, sebum and mats. Photoperiod does drive the cycle, but dietary tryptophan cannot stand in for pharmacological melatonin doses.

⑧ Colour × quality — genetics that set fragility

  • Dilute colours (blue, fawn) and the MLPH gene: melanin clumps inside the shaft and makes hair brittle (J Hered. 2009, Source).
  • A recent clinical update on colour dilution alopecia (CDA) (2025 Update, Source).
  • Implication: coat quality and hair-loss risk are also set by colour (≈ genetics). For dilute coats, avoid friction and over-brushing; rely on gentle moisture- and antioxidant-based care.

⑨ Classifying alopecia — where medicine begins

  • A review classifying canine non-inflammatory alopecia and a diagnostic approach (Welle 2023, Vet Pathol. Source).
  • Implication: symmetrical, widespread, or skin-abnormality-associated hair loss belongs to a clinical examination, not a product routine. Don't try to "cure" with products.

⑩ Environment — water hardness

  • In human studies, washing in hard water increases surfactant residue on the skin and irritation (Danby 2018, J Invest Dermatol.).
  • Epidemiology shows higher domestic water hardness is associated with more atopic dermatitis in infants (Perkin 2016, J Allergy Clin Immunol.).
  • Implication: mainly human evidence, but plausibly relevant to dogs given their thin skin and frequent bathing. The harder the water, the more rinsing, periodic deep cleansing and moisturising matter.

In short — three principles the evidence supports ① Combinations over a single intervention: topical × internal × environmental + gut; ② Don't break the skin barrier or commensal balance (don't over-wash; always moisturise); ③ Healthy coat = raw materials (nutrition) × technique (washing, drying, brushing) × time (the hair cycle).

Note: most of this evidence comes from disease research (especially atopy). When applying it to prevention and maintenance in healthy dogs, allow for individual variation, and consult a vet about anything concerning.

  • Before brushing dry hair is the rule. Mist the whole coat from 15–20 cm away.
  • Avoid the eyes, mouth and inside the ears. Apply to the hands first for the face.
  • Work tip tangles from the ends; lift roots from the roots.
  • On show day it also works as a final touch just before the ring.

Note: product textures (spray/cream/powder) vary. Creams (e.g. Volumising Cream) and powders (e.g. Pixie Dust) are separate categories; this section gathers the spray (mist-on) products.
